One of the guiltiest guilty pleasure drinks you can make is a mudslide. This decadent dessert beverage is probably one that you’ve probably seen but might not have tried to make yourself.
I’ll share with you my method for how to make a mudslide drink. This kind of over-the-top beverage looks really impressive, but I would not say it is difficult to make.
Once you see how to make a mudslide cocktail, you can make your own version with substitutions based on whatever you have available. I will share some substitutes for this drink that you may want to try, after I share with you the method for how to make a mudslide.
The mudslide is one of those cocktails that really stands out because of how incredible it looks, and it definitely tastes just as good. Mixing together vanilla ice, vodka, Baileys, Kahlua, and chocolate drizzle makes for a sensational looking drink.
Then, to top it all off with a healthy dose of whipped cream really seals the deal and makes this cocktail truly memorable. Make it for yourself or serve it up for your friends enjoy the decadent pleasure anytime you like, once you know how to make a mudslide alcoholic drink at home.
How to Make a Mudslide with Kahlua
There are a few different alcohols you combine to make the classic mudslide. You can make it different ways, as I mentioned, but Kahlua is essential for the specific look and flavor a mudslide is supposed to have.
Kahlua is it coffee liqueur that is rich in dark brown in color. While it is usually served mixed into cocktails, it can be served over just ice as well. Kahlua can be stored in a dry, cool place.
Baileys Irish cream is a combination of sugar, chocolate, Irish whiskey, and cream. It’s usually served mixed into other cocktails with another alcoholic beverage or served over ice. It has a smooth and sweet flavor to it and needs to be stored in the fridge to last for a long time.
There are a few different kinds of vodka you can use, and with any of these beverages you want to make sure you get a high-quality alcohol and not something that is cheap and lacking flavor.
The particular vodka used for this cocktail would be an expresso vodka, at least the way I make a mudslide. What that does is bring out the coffee flavor that the Kahlua already offers.
It can be made without the espresso vodka if you can’t find that particular type, and it still comes out fairly well. Vodka should be stored in either a freezer or in a cool and dark place.
High quality ingredients will make a big difference in this cocktail and how well it turns out. I definitely suggest using the best quality ingredients available to make this the first time because then it will be tough to go with cheaper quality ones later on and you get the full experience.
Ingredients:
- 2 ounces of a Kahlua coffee liqueur
- 2 ounces of espresso vodka
- 2 ounces of Baileys Irish cream
- 1 cup of ice
- 16 ounces of vanilla ice cream
- 1/4 cup of whipped cream
- 2 tablespoons of chocolate syrup
Directions:
- Mix together all your alcohol- Kahlua, vodka and Irish cream. Add in the ice and ice cream and mix in the blender.
- Set the blender to pulse and mix until your cocktail is smooth.
- Drizzle the inside of the glass with chocolate syrup. To get the right effect, you should tilt the glass to an angle of about 45 degrees and pour your chocolate into the interior of the glass. As you pour in the syrup, turn your glass around in a swirling motion.
- Then, pour your mudslide mixture into the glass. Add whipped cream on top to garnish. You can also add chocolate syrup for your garnish.
This is my method for how to make a mudslide with ice cream, and you can make it completely without the ice cream and without the ice at all. The mudslide is typically served frozen or at least chilled.
Making Variations of the Mudslide
There are lots of different variations that people will make in their mudslides, and now that you know how to make a Kahlua mudslide, you can substitute some of the alcohol out for something you prefer more.
This can even be made without alcohol at all. You can use expresso coffee and make what is more of a caffeine infused milkshake if you prefer. It will have a similar look but, of course, the taste will be different and it won’t have the same alcoholic effect.
If you want to know how to make a mudslide shot without using ice cream, you can do that with heavy cream instead. It gives you a similar flavor and texture, but it doesn’t come out as cold and it is a pretty good substitute when you don’t have ice cream available.
You probably have some indication of how to make a mudslide with rum at this point, simply substituting out the vodka for rum.
The Baileys Irish cream and coffee-flavored Kahlua are really essential for this drink, to give it to the flavor and texture it is supposed to have, but the vodka can be substituted out for just about any alcoholic beverage you would like to put into the drink. Or, it can be left out entirely.
Another variation is to leave off the ice cream and use milk for a less fattening and less sugary drink. I don’t think anyone is drinking this beverage for their health, but if you want to keep the calorie count low, milk is a really good way to go, especially if you use skim or 2% milk.
The flavor won’t be as rich and it won’t be quite as creamy, but you’ll shave off a few calories and perhaps feel a little less guilt when you drink it.
